Species of Space by George Perec is a constellation of texts that interrogates into different spaces. Of central concern is the order and system in which the texts are organised: from a book page to a bedroom, via a state with territorial borders to finally include outer space. This inventory, as well as 1974, the year of the publication of the book, is the theme of the project Species of Spaces 1974 – an Accomodation of Retained and Forgotten Spaces. The project, inititated by the artists Cecilia Darle and Kristina Bength, is unfolding in an exhibition and in this book to which the nine artists contribute with an essay. The group’s point of departure is the writings of Perec, in which limitations and rules become a working method, hinting at an autobiographical latency.
